Brisbane City Council commenced a beautification scheme in 1970’s and the cemetery was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 2003. Since that time there has been a massive upturn in research and protection of the cemetery, new grave plots have opened up, and the future of the cemetery now seems assured.. South Brisbane Cemetery (aka Dutton Park Cemetery) is one of the earliest cemeteries in Queensland. It was reserved as a cemetery in 1864 but the first official burial did not take place until August 1870. It has been rumoured that several burials of Aboriginals occurred prior this date. An extra seven acres were added to the original cemetery.

Dutton Park has (quite surprisingly) one of the richest histories of any Brisbane suburb. It has been home to a cemetery, shanty town, thriving suburban resort, prisons, a bakery hub, trains and trams and ferries, and all sorts of government reserves and institutions. This tour explores that history by visiting the graves of old time residents.. South Brisbane Cemetery, also known as Dutton Park Cemetery, is a heritage-listed cemetery at 21 Fairfield Road and Annerley Road, Dutton Park, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, adjacent to the Brisbane River. It was built from 1870 to 1990s. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 1 October 2003.
